I Choose to Live gives students knowledge about teen suicide

The Freshman Class attended the I Choose to Live assembly on Thursday, March 29, during seminar.

The assembly wanted to communicate to students “the importance of always choosing to live no matter how hopeless they might feel,” Helen Hardgree, sponsor, said.

On the day of the assembly, the freshmen had discussions during their advisory hour with some of the students in charge of the event.

The assembly was then held in the auditorium where students watched a small skit and listened to counselor statements post performance.

The main goal was to “help students know the signs of someone contemplating suicide,” Hardgree stated, “and to equip them with the knowledge of what to do if they or someone else is contemplating suicide.”

The I Choose to Live assembly is a small aspect of the Rachel’s Challenge group.

Students involved with the assembly included Hayley Murguia, Lily Gray, Caroline Sukstorf, Daniel Eagan and Maddie Bachtold, seniors; Eve Wright, Andrea Vandenbark, Madison Prough and Kate Schmidt, juniors; Jacob Krafft, Peyton Fair, Jillian Otero, and Carolyn White, sophomores. These students performed the skit for the freshmen.

An additional 15 students were involved with the class discussions.

Students who wish to get involved with the assembly in the future must contact a current member of the group or see Helen Hardgree if they are interested. Tryouts will be held before the end of this school year.
