Students were encouraged to read books from the public library over the summer at the book event in the library during seminar on April 6.

Megan Roberts said, “I wanted to hopefully have students read at public libraries more because they have many programs.”

Students could sign up for the first and second session of seminar to listen to Katie McNair, Johnson County teen librarian, and Angela Parks, teen services supervisor from the Olathe Public Library. In their jobs, they put on different programs, host author visits and help advise on different book collections in the public libraries.

They brought different books they have already read. They then asked the students which books they were interested in and gave a summary of those selections to encourage the students to read.

McNair has talked at book events for 10 years at Blue Valley Southwest and different schools like Shawnee Mission West, and Parks mainly talks to schools in the Olathe School District.

McNair said, “It’s really fun,” and Parks agreed with her.

One of Roberts’ favorite authors right now is Rainbow Rowell who writes realistic fiction and April Henry who writes very suspenseful stories.
