Boys Swimming

Swimmers take 12th as a team at state meet

Swim team members competed at the state tournament Feb. 16-18 in Topeka and their coach was satisfied with their results.

Swimming coach Brandon Simpson is extremely happy that the boys tried their best. Simpson said, “They put themselves into a situation for success, and they came away with very good swims.”

The seniors were Max Stoneking, Marko Tasic, Matt Jaeger and Daniel Moriera. Stoneking placed second team all-state with two individual medals and finished in the top eight at state in both; he placed fifth in 200 IM, and seventh in 500 free.

Tasic placed 12th in the 200 free and placed 11th in the 500 free. Tasic, Stoneking, Bennett Junkins and Bradon Powell, sophomores, placed 11th in the 200 free relay.

Ben Stoeck, sophomore, placed fifth in the 200 free, and Junkins placed 24th in the 200 free. Powell was 23rd in the 100 free and Stoeck placed 16th in the 500 free. Stoeck, Tasic, Powell and Stoneking placed 11th in the 200 free relay.

Junkins placed 21st in 100 back, Powell, Junkins, Stoeck and Zac Crockett, sophomore, placed 11th in the 400 free relay.

Overall the boys swim team placed 12th. Simpson believes that with the training that the boys did along the physical health they were in made them swim to their best ability.

Simpson said, “I don’t think I learned anything that I didn’t already know from the previous 12 weeks of practicing nine times a week. These boys know what benefit they get from that hard work.”

 

Wrestling

Wrestlers take third and fourth place at state

Boy wrestling members competed at the state tournament Feb. 24-25 in Hartman Arena in Wichita, and their coach was satisfied with their results: a state champion as well as a third and fourth place.

All the seniors this season on the wrestling team were Anthony Swann, Simon Potter, Riley Shaughnessy, Mario Vazquez, Enrique Cabrera, Christian Cortes, Braden Grant, Jacob Leone, and Austin Miller. Three qualified for state.

Beside the three seniors, seven others qualified for state: Nick Jouret, Jace Koelzer, juniors; Brandon Stowe, Max Knard, Zach Vesper, sophomores; and Gavin Brown and Dallas Koelzer, freshmen.

Dallas Koelzer finished fourth at 106 pounds, Jace Koelzer finished third at 120 pounds and Jouret was state champion at 170 pounds in the 6A state tournament.

Jouret said, “I was really happy with how the tournament went for me and relieved to get the state title.”

Conor Fitzgerald, head wrestling coach, is excited about the season and how state went.

Fitzgerald said, “I loved every second of this season with this team. We made strides this year.”

He would not change one thing about the season and learned that many of the people that qualified will be coming back next year.

Fitzgerald said, “Seven out of 10 qualifiers and all the three medalists” will be returning.

 

Bowling

At the state bowling tournament, Braden Davis, junior, placed second at Northrock Lanes in Wichita on March 3.

“I was excited and happy, but kind of surprised,” Davis said.

He bowled a 700 series including Brandon Keeling, senior, and Malia Toomay, freshman. Keeling bowled a 468, series and Toomay was one of the girls in the state tournament that advanced with a 408 series.

Davis and Keeling represented the school during the boys event. The girls bowled in the morning while the boys bowled in the afternoon.

Keeling said, “I am glad I went my senior year.  “It was very fun and exciting.” Davis is happy with his results because he placed second.
