The girls softball team are off the ground celebrating their second state title in two years.

The softball team and Jacque Darby, senior, took their second state titles the weekend of May 27-28.

The team was able to celebrate their back-to-back state victory after defeating Topeka Washburn Rural 10-3 in the state 6A championship game on Saturday held at Blue Valley West.

Even though Washburn Rural’s pitcher Madison Roth came into Saturday’s game with 12 consecutive scoreless innings, the Falcons broke that streak. They scored 10 runs in the 5 1/2 innings that Roth pitched. They scored 4 runs in the first inning of the game.

To get to the championship game, the team defeated Garden City 3-1 in the quarterfinals and had a 9-7 win over Olathe Northwest in the semifinals.

At the 6A state track meet at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium, Darby took first for the second time in the 100 meter dash in 12.03 seconds and also won the 200 in 24.96.

Darby also anchored the school’s winning 4×100 relay team in 48.32, which included Riley Degner, freshman; Grace Williams, junior; and Breanna Wise, senior. Williams also finished fourth and fifth in the 100 and 200 meter finals, respectively.

The girls track team finished third.

For the boys track team, Cameron Waldo, junior, took first in the 400 meter in 48.68, and Jared Reinke, senior, took second in the 800 in 1:54.36. In the 300 meter hurdles, Emmanuel Okwuone, sophomore, came in third in 40.26.

Okwuone was also part of the 4×400 meter relay team that took first in 3:18.3; the team included  Reinke, Waldo and Robert Adger, junior.

The boys track team finished seventh.
