Debate state

Taylor Thompson, junior, and Justin Rounbehler, sophomore, placed second with a 6-3 record at novice state on Jan. 9-10.

Five novices placed in the top 25 speaker placements at state: third place went to Dakota Morrison, freshman; 13th to Thompson; 16th to Coleman Puett, junior; 18th to Carter Jones, freshman, and 22nd place went to Ian Boyd-Duncan,junior.

Also competing at novice state were Jamie Pellikaan, sophomore, and Kaytlin Hill, freshman.

At the state debate tournament Jan. 16-17 at Derby, Kan., advanced debaters, Katy Dorrell, Ben Williams,  Alex Francis, juniors, and Dylan Willett, senior, placed fourth.

Scholars’ Bowl

The Scholars’ Bowl team took third place in meet at Bishop Miege on Jan. 15, with an overall 7-2 record.

The team hosted a tournament on Jan. 8, with a total of 12 other teams competing as Desoto came out as the victors.

Scholars’ Bowl has two more meets this month.

On Jan. 26, the team goes on the road to Gardner-Edgerton.

Then on Jan. 29, they travel to compete at Lawrence.

Next month on Feb. 5, the team will compete at regionals atWashburn Rural.

Newspaper named All-American

Last year’s Eyrie received the All-American Honor award, which is the highest award, from the Scholastic Press Association.

Judging was based on six different issues, three from each of semester.  The Eyrie received marks of distinction in content, writing, photos/art, layout and leadership.

The publication was congratulated on many things including good coverage, good presentation of information and good design.

KMEA State

Students auditioned to be selected for the four KMEA musical all-state groups; band, choir, jazz band, and orchestra.

Those who made the band group are Christian Long, junior, and Connor Fulk, senior. In addition Fulk is also an alternate for piano in the jazz band.

In the middle level choir group are Chase Simmons, Hayley Dunitz, Savannah Gooch, and Brittany Taylor, freshmen.

Lastly, in the all-state orchestra are Rachel Li, Tanner Leon, Carley Eschliman, and Lilly Bruington, juniors, and Callie VanWinkle, senior.
