Eyrie excited about A.L.I.C.E.

A.L.I.C.E seems to be a positive change for Olathe South. The school board put A.L.I.C.E in place to replace the old “Code Red” when handling situations where an intruder enters the school.

Most staff favor the aspect of counter- attacking the intruder. Instead of having to sit in a dark classroom as a bunch of sitting ducks, we are now allowed to take counter measures if we happen upon the intruder and can even evacuate the building.

Along with the thought of smashing some windows, students are also excited about the new change involving evacuation. There will still be meeting points where teachers will take role; however, it means that we don’t have to sit and wait, fearing that every minute could be life-altering.

Along with the positive reactions that are accompanying A.L.I.C.E, also come some doubts. Some have been asking about the effectiveness about some of the aspects of A.L.I.C.E., such as informing the school as the incident occurs.

How will the information be broadcast to the school accurately? And how will they keep up? Especially when most incidents involving violence in schools occur in under five minutes.

Many suspect that the “inform” step in A.L.I.C.E will most likely be abandoned when the event occurs.

The teachers have also helped boost the positivity about A.L.I.C.E through making the in-class discussions light-hearted and not quite so morbid while keeping things serious at the same time.

Aside from the doubt being cast on informing, A.L.I.C.E is creating quite a rumble within the school, and from the talk, it’s a very positive outcome.
