Briefs: Robotics, National Merit Finalists, Prom

Robotics —

On March 16-18 the robotics team placed ninth against their competitors and were chosen as the number 12 team, which was the highest they’ve ever ranked.

The team went to the Metropolitan Community College for Business and Technology in Kansas City, Missouri for the competition.

Dennis Burkett, robotics sponsor, said “Our robot went really well, and next time we will try to build on that success.”

Thirty students are currently participating in robotics, and hopefully more students will join in the near future.

National Merit finalists —

The National Merit finalists are Bethany Bluel, Nicholas Hinman, Emmalee Reed and Kyle Wetter, seniors, who were also all semifinalists.

They were given the PSAT in October and had to make a qualifying score, fill out paper work, receive recommendation letters from teachers and counselors, and take the SAT to verify their PSAT score.

The 2017 Selection Index score for Kansas was approximately 199-203.

The deadline was on Oct. 12, and the finalists were announced in January to Mary Glotzbach, counselor. The award benefits these four participants by getting scholarships from different colleges, up to a full ride.
