The Science Olympiad placed 10th at regionals as the team battled head to head with other schools.

On Saturday, Feb. 25 at Johnson County Community College, the team came home with six medalists. These students medaled in the categories of Invasive Species, first place; Rocks and Minerals, second place, Chemistry Lab, Dynamic Planet and Ecology, fifth place.

The team qualified for state, making this year their eighth year in a row.

Preparing for regionals, the team has gone to Staley High School, in North Kansas City, Mo..; Warrensburg High School, in Warrensburg, Mo.; and Olathe North for competitions.

The team consists of students who competed in 23 different science events against other schools. These events often included timed exams that were scored later that day.

Donald Meier, sponsor, described a typical competition starting at 7:30 a.m. and there being six different time slots that last an hour. Within a few hours the awards are announced.

To prepare for these competitions, participants practice individually.

“Some Saturday mornings students come in when they can and work on what they need,” Meier said.
