A team of five students won the history contest sponsored by the Truman Library on Oct. 17.

The contest is hosted annually by the Truman Library. The students who went to compete were Drake Minter, Kyle Wetter, Patrick Grey, Nick Hinman and Connor Horn, all seniors.

“It gives kids an opportunity to share their knowledge about presidents,” Helen Hardgree, sponsor, said.

Nine schools from all over the metro were at the history contest, each school having teams of six besides Olathe South.

“Everyone had six students; we had five. Just didn’t have anyone to go with us,” Wetter said.

The questions were about presidents and vice presidents, including their parties and their lives outside the presidency.

The contest had five rounds, each round having 10 questions. Students had three minutes to answer their questions on ballots that they turned to a scoring judge. The students worked as a team and earned one point every question answered.

It was the first time going to the Truman Library for Wetter, and he liked the abundance of flowers everywhere as well as the flame that burns at the memorial to Harry Truman, former U.S president.

Wetter and his team prepared for the contest by answering practice questions in the car on the way to the Truman Library; they managed to win first place with only a team of five.
