News Briefs: marching, mattress fundraiser, and debate

Marching Festival

The Falcon Regiment competed in the first competition of the season, the Festival of Champions, at the University of Central Missouri on Oct. 15.

The competition had a preliminary round followed by a final round. To qualify for finals, each band must place either first or second in their division, or have had one of the next four high scores.

The Regiment scored a 74, or seventh out of 28, in the preliminary round and a 71.8, or eighth out of 12, in the finals.

 

Band Mattress Fundraiser—

The band raised $5,000 from its annual mattress fundraiser on Sept. 17 in the north gym.

They recently bought a new sound system with the money from the fundraiser. They also used fundraising money to pay for marching band shows and their trailer. The band students promoted the fundraiser by posting on social media, handing out flyers and having their parents send out emails regarding the fundraiser.

The first year, they raised $6,500.Last year, they raised $10,000.

 

Debate—

Debate team members have picked up several awards in the last few weeks.

At Shawnee Mission North on Oct. 8, Austin Luginbill and Anthony Sutt, juniors, went 5-0 to take second.

Kay Hill, senior, and Micah Leckliter, sophomore, won sixth place and had a 4-1 record. Ben Heigle and Owen Sutt, sophomores, also won sixth place with a 4-1 record.

The team took third at Olathe North on Oct. 1, and Cameron Clark and Jordan Lewis, seniors, having a 5-0 record and winning second place.

At Shawnee Mission South on Sept. 24, Katia Coleman, sophomore, won fifth and Jenna Stokes, sophomore had a 4-1 record.

The team also attended Shawnee Mission East on Sept. 24 where Kameron James-Rose and Griffin Mintor, sophomores, went 7-8.
