Golf team heads into regionals

“We’re rumbling,” Matt Thompson, senior, said.

This has been the team motto since the first day of tryouts. The double meaning of the phrase fits well with the sport. “Rumbling” can mean playing really well, or not so well; it all depends on the day.

“We have a chance to qualify for state this year,” Coach Luke Greene said. “Everyone has to play their best golf on the same day, which is a lot to ask for.”

The way state qualifications work is very systematical. The top three teams qualify, then they take those players out of the pool for individual qualifiers. After team qualifications, the next best 10 players qualify.

Last year, Thompson was the only golfer from the team to qualify.

“This year is going to be different; we have the best chance that we’ve had in a long time to qualify as a team to state,” Thompson said.

The golf team has the regional tournament at St. Andrews Golf Club on May 16. They just played a tournament there on May 5. Jackson Likes, freshman, shot a 78 for a 10th place finish and Thompson had an 83 for a top 15 finish.

“The team now knows what they have to do for regionals since they got to play a full round there; they can get it done,” Greene said.
