Students perform at Carnegie Hall

Carnegie Hall in New York holds performances of many different musicians. This year Veronica Wood, senior, and Chase Simmons, sophomore, sang at Carnegie Hall.

On Sunday, Feb. 7, they performed on stage with an honor choir.

The choir they performed with rehearsed for four days, twice a day, before the performace.

“We sang five pieces,” Simmons said.

Auditions were held prior to the trip by an honor choir not affiliated with the school. Of the 18,000 people who originally auditioned, “only about 250 made the mixed choir,” Wood said.

The choir auditions were available all over the world, so participants in the choir were international, and the choir was conducted by Jeffery Ames from Nashville.

“I got to work with students from places like Guam, Mexico, South Korea and New Zealand,” Wood said.

Wood has gone on the trip for the last three years.

“I heard about it when Dr. Sheppard nominated me,” Wood said.

This year Wood’s step-mom and dad went with her, and Simmon’s grandmother went.

Simmons said, “The trip was what I needed to see what it is like as a performer.”

Both only had to pay extra for food the whole trip.

Along with the performance, in New York City, Wood and Simmons saw a Broadway show, visited Top of the Rock and went on a yacht.

“The best part of the trip was either going to the Top of the Rock or just coming back to the hotel room and talking with my other three roomates,” Simmons said.
