Student behavior in school has gotten out of control. Students should have enough basic human decency to understand that throwing objects and booing at people who work hard in the school is inappropriate and downright disrespectful. If we want to be treated like adults then start acting like it.
The number of students who joke in the hallways about suicide or killing people is unacceptable. Suicide is not a joke. Killing people is not a joke. These things are serious and shouldn’t be the basis of a joke. Many students are struggling with their mental health. We have lost too many students and had countless talks from administration about suicide and its prevention for us to be joking about something so serious.
All people in the building are human beings and deserve to be treated as such. There’s a saying that if ‘you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.’ Students need to start having this mindset. It isn’t funny to be mean;it doesn’t make you cooler. Stop being mean just to be mean.
Not only do we see a problem with student behavior in the hallways, it’s in the classroom as well. Don’t laugh or make jokes about students who are different from you, or don’t act the same way that you do. When the bullying stops, the environment in school will improve. School will be a lot more enjoyable when students aren’t being harassed every day. We need an inclusive environment where everyone feels like they can be themselves without judgment.
Students aren’t just mean to other students, they’re mean to teachers.
Being mean to a teacher or a substitute is not appropriate, no matter how many laughs you get in a classroom. Making inappropriate jokes around teachers that you know they won’t understand and making them sound dumb is degrading and disrespectful. Things that may be funny to you are not for other people.
When a substitute tells you to do something, just listen. Substitutes are given plans for what to do in the class, don’t argue just to be difficult or because you think you’re right. Stop trying to gaslight them by saying that your teacher lets you do things you don’t actually do in class. We already don’t have enough subs in the district, so much so that there are teachers covering for other teachers during their plan times. They are just trying to do their jobs, stop making it difficult for them.
Treat people the way that you want to be treated. Teachers don’t want to come back from their time away to find out that their students were horrible to their sub. This makes teachers not want to take days off or feel like they can’t because they don’t trust their students not to be horrible, leading them to burn out.
Just because someone else does something doesn’t mean you need to do the same. If a student is being mean to a substitute, don’t add on to it, don’t make the situation worse. If you see a student bullying someone, don’t laugh along and add on to it, tell an adult. Don’t just let the bullying keep happening.
Even further, there is a time and place for everything; we need to start thinking about our actions before we act on them.
School is not the time to vape. Twenty people crowding every bathroom during passing periods prevents students who need to use the restroom from even entering the room.
There should be no reason why administration needs to close bathrooms because there are too many fights, or there are too many people vaping. Not only is this an inconvenience for students, but administrators and teachers shouldn’t have to guard the bathrooms; they have plenty of other, more important things to do.
Students need to stop showing apathy. Care about your school work. Care when someone is getting bullied. Care when someone is being mean to a substitute or teacher. Care about the trash in the hallway. Care about each other. When students act like they don’t care, it sets a precedent for the entire school that we all don’t care.
Students need to be held accountable for themselves and their actions. They also need to hold each other accountable. If you see or hear something that isn’t kind or you’re concerned about, tell an adult that you trust.
Dr. DeMaree has shown countless times that he truly cares about this school and is doing what he can to make sure the school is a safe place to be, but he can’t do it alone. Students need to help by standing up for their peers, saying something if there’s something wrong, showing kindness, and caring for each other. Students must put in the work to help the school. Change can’t happen with just one person, it needs to be a team of people working together.
The school needs to be a safe and inclusive space for everyone, and all students should take steps toward ensuring that such a space is created. Help Falcon Flight Crew create a school culture where everyone feels included and has fun, don’t lead them to not be able to do anything fun. Help teachers earn your trust, so they can feel secure when they have to leave the classroom. Help our school be a fun and inclusive environment for everyone.
