About
Mission Statement: At The Eyrie, we seek to inform, promote open discussion, and provide a voice for the voiceless. We do this by covering stories that matter to the Olathe South Community with integrity and transparency, creating a safe platform for the open exchange of ideas and opinions, and exploring the unique perspectives of all students regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or religion.
Editorial Policy: The Eyrie will provide an open forum in which diverse opinions of the community as a whole may be expressed in the exercise of democratic rights. Submissions of letters to the editor and guest editorials by any reader of the publication are welcomed. Letters should not exceed 350 words; editorials will be limited to 1,500 words. The editorial board will edit for length, clarity, punctuation and grammar. Letters and guest editorials will also be edited for legal and ethical concerns. Only “experts in the field” will be solicited for guest opinions. The final publication decision shall be made by the editor(s)-in-chief. Letters must deal with issues and may not be personal vendettas.
All works must be signed. Names will be published unless special, justifiable circumstances warrant their withholding, which are determined by the editor-in-chief. The publication will provide equal space and adequate response time for other letters/editorials of opposing viewpoints. The editor-in-chief will determine when an issue has been given ample, balanced discussion space, thus allowing room for other opinions relating to other issues. An abbreviated form of this policy will appear in every publication, including delivery instructions for letters/editorials.
Disclaimer: This is a student publication that may contain controversial topics. We do not represent the ideas or opinions of Olathe School District No. 233 and its board members, officers, or employees; it is not an expression of School District Policy. Students and editors are solely responsible for the content of this student publication.
Censorship policy: The Kansas Student Publications Act guarantees the same rights for student journalists as are guaranteed for professional journalists. These rights include, but are not limited to, all First Amendment rights, including the rights of freedom of speech and the press. Published items may not contain libelous, slanderous or obscene statements, may not incite or promote illegal conduct and may not cause a substantial disruption to normal school activity. This also prevents censorship of any kind by the adviser, building, or district administration.
Circulation: The Eyrie is published in print 6-8 times during the school year. The web page serves as a complement to the print editions and contains information not published in print. Copies of the print edition are available for free to Olathe South students and staff on distribution days, or in room 907.
