The Mortal Kombat 2021 Trailer Looks Solid

NetherRealm Studios is an extremely popular game development company that is well known throughout the gaming community. They have made multiple popular games such as Injustice and Batman: Arkham City. Their most popular game, Mortal Kombat will be getting a movie on April 16, 2021.

The trailer for the movie, which can be viewed on Youtube, is 2 minutes and 40 seconds long. It starts with two characters, Jax and Sub-Zero, fighting each other. Sub-Zero freezes Jax’s arms and then proceeds to break them into pieces. The title screen drops and it transitions to a guy named Cole getting an explanation as to why he has a dragon “birthmark”. While he is getting an explanation, it cuts to a guy, who we later find out is Scorpion, killing three people who we can assume have come to kill him. The trailer proceeds to give us the names of “Earth’s champions”: Sonya, Kano, Liu Kang, Jax, Kung Liao, and Lord Raiden. It goes through a few action sequences and it ends after a collage of gory scenes.

After seeing the trailer, I can say that I liked it very much. The characters resemble what they look like in the games. Scorpion looks like what he does in the games, showing that the creators of the movie respect the source material. The special effects were great, they didn’t look like they were out of place in any way. Sub-Zero’s ice looks realistic as if it was something that could happen in the real world. The music is also great. It highlights the intensity of the scenes as they are being acted out.

There are some things I found odd with the trailer, however. The main issue is that the guy that replaces Johnny Cage is someone named Cole. I have never seen Cole in any of the previous games and I’m a little confused as to why he replaced someone as popular as Johnny Cage. Regardless though, I do think that it could be a good addition. They added someone new to the series, so this can be either a bad thing or a good thing. Another problem I had was what happened to Jax’s arms. In the games, Jax got his arms ripped off by Ermac, not Sub-Zero. It’s a little weird to see such a tragic event being caused by someone other than one of the big bad himself.

I am personally excited to see that another movie about Mortal Kombat is coming out and I can’t wait to watch it. Some minor things have changed, for the better or worse but I think that it will be worth it in the long run. Hopefully, people will watch it, give the creators their due respect, and we’re able to see a beautiful movie come to fruition.
