5 Halloween movies to get you into the spooky spirit

“Coraline” will make your skin crawl. This stop motion animation is about an 11 year old girl who becomes lonely and feels neglected by her parents after they move into an old house. She decides to explore the house, and finds a passage that has been covered up by thin wallpaper. She ends up going inside the passage at night and discovers a version of her life that is better, but everyone has buttons for eyes. Coraline eventually discovers that this parallel world has a terrible secret. 

 

“Halloweentown” is a Disney Channel Original movie about 12 year old Marnie, who turns out to be a witch. Her grandmother, Aggie, is a witch and comes to visit her so she can start Marnie’s witch training before she turns 13. If she doesn’t start the training before she turns 13, Marnie will lose her powers forever. However, Aggie did not show up just to train Marnie; she needs help to defeat the evil in Halloweentown. “Halloweentown” is a great movie to watch for families with young children.

 

“Monster House” is about 2 young boys, DJ and Chowder, who are creeped out by the house across the street. The owner of the creepy old house is Mr. Nebbercracker, who is presumably dead. Whenever their toys landed in the lawn, Mr. Nebbercracker and the house took them from the boys, so DJ and Chowder decide to destroy the house from the inside. This movie is great for you if you don’t like horror movies.

 

Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is a classic Halloween movie. Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, becomes bored  of celebrating Halloween the exact same way every year. Jack and his ghost dog, Zero, head into the woods on Halloween night out of boredom and stumble upon a circle of trees representing different holidays. The tree representing Christmas catches Jack’s interest and he decides to go inside. He discovers an amazing world and wants to share it with the rest of Halloween Town. The citizens love it and decide to celebrate their own version of Christmas, but Jack Skellington’s plan doesn’t work how he wanted it to. This stop motion movie is great for families with young children wanting to be spooked!

 

In “Hocus Pocus,” teenager Max Dennison lights a candle that brings the Sanderson sisters back to life. They were executed during the Salem Witch Trials, and now that they are alive again, they have one night to become immortal and will wreak havoc among trick-or-treaters. Max, his little sister, and a 300 year old black cat have to save the trick-or-treaters from the witches. Max is determined to stop them along with the help of his sister and the cat. “Hocus Pocus” is a classic Halloween movie that is loved by many.
