Super Bowl LIV (54) will take place in Miami on Feb. 2, and will feature the Kansas City Chiefs playing the San Francisco 49ers. This will be the first appearance in over 50 years for the Chiefs while the 49ers will be going for their sixth Lombardi trophy. These two teams have gotten to the Super Bowl playing two completely different styles of football.
First, the NFC Champions San Francisco 49ers had a 13-3 regular season. They got to the big game by beating the Minnesota Vikings 27-10 in the divisional round and the Green Bay Packers 37-20 in the NFC title game.
Their style of offense is very run heavy. In the NFC title game, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo threw only eight passes the entire game. Though, this style has been working as Raheem Mostert has averaged 139 yards per game in the playoffs according to Pro Football Reference. He also scored four touchdowns in the rout of the Packers.
The Niners defense has been helped out by this run heavy offense. According to NFL.com the Niners are the number two team in Total Defense in terms of Yards Per Game, only allowing an average of 281.8 YPG.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been the exact opposite throughout the season. They have had a strong pass first offense which can score in a hurry. The Chiefs went 12-4 in the regular season with wins against the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round and the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship.
The Chiefs have been led all season long by reigning MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes has had another incredible season, passing for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns according to Pro-Football-Reference. He accomplished this all while missing two full games and three quarters of a game with a dislocated patella.
The Chiefs defense has also grown stronger throughout the season. Team captain Tyrann Mathieu has given this defense a massive spark that has made them a unit to fear going into the Super Bowl. Frank Clark has also been a force this postseason totaling four sacks through two games according to NFL.com
With two high powered offenses squaring off it is sure to be a high scoring game. Both teams have deserved to the right to be on the field Super Bowl Sunday. This Super Bowl is shaping up to be one for the record books.
