‘Heathers’ is a popular Broadway show about bullying, suicide, gun violence, friendship, and romance. A lot of people classify it as a dark comedy. The show is based off of the 1988 movie.
The lead role, Veronica Sawyer, is a senior at Westerberg High and dreams of being popular. She wants to be like the Heathers. The Heathers are the popular girls who choose to mock and bully everyone into listening to them, making them the rulers of Westerberg High.Veronica ends up helping the Heathers get out of detention by forging all of their names on a hall pass. By doing this, Heather Chandler, the leader of the Heathers, decides to let Veronica in on their exclusive group.
After joining the Heathers, Veronica realizes that being “Heather” means bullying her best friend Martha Dunstock. She decides to try and leave the group, but Heather Chandler banished Veronica from the Heathers along with every other group at Westerberg High, leaving Veronica all alone. Veronica then turns to a new student, Jason Dean (JD), for comfort. When Veronica and JD go to Heather Chandler’s house to apologize, Veronica ends up giving Heather the wrong drink and ends up killing her with bleach. JD then convinces Veronica to stage a suicide note to make it look like Heather Chandler killed herself. Veronica and JD then use their new superpower to try and get rid of the rest of Westerberg Highs bullies.
The music, lyrics and book were written by Lawrence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy. Some fan favorites include ‘Beautiful,’ ‘Candy Store,’ ‘Dead Girl Walking,’ and ‘Meant to Be Yours.’
