‘Degree in 3’ provides options

Despite all of the hype, for some, a four-year degree would simply not be a practical way to obtain an education.

Getting a degree in four years can be extremely expensive and time consuming, taking away from the number of years one could be pursuing a job in his degree field.

Johnson County Community College (JCCC) and the University of Kansas (KU) now provide an opportunity to obtain a bachelor’s degree through a program known as “Degree in Three.”

These programs in the Kansas City area make it possible to lower student debt and still get a relevant degree in a desired field.

Degrees available are the excersise science and information technology degrees.

Some may ask, “How do I qualify for this program, and is it difficult for me to get into it?” The answer is both encouraging and simple.

By simply taking classes in high school that provide college credit through JCCC, a student can get a great head start in this program.

The next step after taking these advanced classes known as JCCC College Now and Quick Step while in high school is to complete the remaining freshman/sophomore credit hours from JCCC and complete an Associates degree.

For some, getting this Associate’s degree may be their desired goal, and they could stop at this point and continue on to a successful career.

For others, continuing on their bachelor’s degree is the course of action that would be most beneficial to their goals.

Those that wish to push on and get their Bachelor’s would be required to meet with an advisor and discuss transferring to KU Edwards Campus.

After making this transfer, a student would need to apply for admission to KU in the semester before enrolling (students beginning in fall should apply by Feb. 1).

The Olathe School District and the Blue Valley School District are currently the only two districts that are partners in this program with JCCC and KU.

KU Edwards Campus even provides a variety of masters programs that can be completed within five years of graduating high school.

Scholarships and other financial aid are available both at the JCCC and KU Edwards Campus.

Students should watch for priority application deadlines when applying for admission.
