Ever dreamed of opening up your own business? Well, for Sophia Hansen, senior, this dream is closer to becoming a reality.

Hansen has been a part of Olathe North’s culinary program for two years, and this has propelled her plan to open her own vegan bakery.

Being vegan has been important in Hansen’s life for two years now. She made the choice after viewing a documentary on Netflix exposing the food industry.

“I’ve always enjoyed baking. But, ever since I went vegan, I realized the extremely limited amount of vegan baked goods available. Once I placed two of my passions, being vegan and baking, together I knew I had discovered my purpose, “ Hansen said.

The culinary program has prepared Hansen for her future by teaching her management skills and everything associated with opening a business.

Hansen has spent a lot of time considering how she will implement all vegan goods into her bakery.

“I plan to use substitute ingredients: ground flax seed instead of eggs and using coconut and almond dairy-free milk,” Hansen said.

Since Hansen has been a part of the culinary program, she feels like she needs to learn more about the business side of owning a bakery.

“I hope to gain the necessary business skills and nutritional knowledge to pursue my dreams,” Hansen said. Hansen will continue her education at Kansas State University in the fall.
