Road wins crucial for Sporting KC

The Sporting Kansas City soccer team has been having an average season and is not doing as well as in previous years, and their chances to go to the Major League Soccer (MLS) playoffs are very unlikely.

As of Sept. 12, Sporting KC was fifth in the Western Conference with 11 wins and 12 losses. They have had nine wins, four losses, and two ties, when they are playing home games. For away games, they have had two wins, eight losses, and four ties.

This season, Dom Dwyer, forward has made 13 goals, the most on the team. Tim Melia, goalkeeper, has saved 52 shots out of 75. Sporting KC needs to take advantage of all their home games and get a win, and more importantly get more wins at away games.

Sporting KC is right behind Real Salt Lake with 12 wins and eight losses. In first place in the Western Conference is FC Dallas with 15 wins and eight losses. Road wins this season are 46 wins out of 264 games played, which is 17.4 percent wins, compared to last year’s away games with 85 wins out of 340 games, 25 percent wins.

For a chance at the MLS playoffs, Sporting KC would first need to beat Real Salt Lake. Sporting KC has lost both of their meetings with Real Salt Lake this season.

As of Sept. 16, there are still six games left until the end of the regular season, and the MLS playoffs will begin on Oct. 26. Although their chances are unlikely, Sporting KC has the talent to make the playoffs.
