Prom to recreate Great Gatsby era

The Roaring Twenties. The Jazz Age. Années Folles, or “the crazy years.” These phrases, among many others, are often used to describe the 1920s, which was full of music, literature, opportunities and rebellion.

The scenes that characterized this decade are being recreated at the 2016 prom, and the prom committee has been working diligently for the past couple months to decide on the theme, decorations, activities and other details that go into the perfect prom.

The Great Gatsby-themed prom will be held at the Embassy Suites hotel on Ridgeview as opposed to the previous Overland Park Convention Center. It will start at 9 p.m. and last until midnight.

Tickets will cost $20 per person and $40 per couple; however, each senior will receive one ticket for free.

John Plankers, foreign language teacher, is one of the prom committee sponsors, and he believes that everyone should attend prom because “you only get one or two proms and it’s at a very fun location, [but] there’s a chance that we won’t ever get it again because it’s so new.”

In addition to the formal dance, a carnival-themed after prom will be held at the school from 12:30 – 2:30 a.m. Activities will include inflatables, airbrush tattoos, food and a DJ.

It is free to all students, but they must pick up a ticket during prom ticket sales.

According to Plankers, “No one is too cool for prom. It’s a nice, safe environment to spend time with friends before graduation, [so] no excuses!”
