Why does Shelby Otte get up at 5 a.m. every day?
March 23, 2016
Shelby Otte, senior, has a desire to write that has motivated her since she was 12 years old.
She writes about a wide variety of subjects, but her work mostly falls into the categories of realistic fiction, mental health or poetry. Otte enjoys writing because she “loves the expression” it provides.
“I like how people can relate to my stories and what I’ve been through,” Otte said. “It turns a bad experience into something beautiful.”
Otte’s inspiration comes from her favorite author, Zac Brewer and Suzanne Collins.
“My favorite has to be Zac Brewer. I connect with his personal story and experience,“ Otte said. After reading “The
Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, Otte became dedicated to start writing.
In the past years, Otte has entered several creative writing contests and has had her work published in places such as the Kansas City Star and “The American Library of Poetry.”
Otte’s favorite piece is titled “Burns” which focuses on her father. She hopes to use her writing skills to become an author or “something English related.”
Otte’s advice is to make time for writings and to focus on the beautiful things in life.
“I’ve been waking up at 5 each morning since freshman year. Make time for something you love to do,” Otte said.
