Poetry team slams into semifinals
March 11, 2016
This is the first year that Olathe South has had an official slam poetry team, but it seems it will not be the last. The team placed second in preliminary round of the competition “Louder Than a Bomb” on March 7.
This qualifies them for semifinals on March 28.
The team consists of six members as well as an alternate. They perform six individual poems and then one group piece, consisting of seven students. They all enjoyed the experience.
“It was incredible,” Breeaunna Dowdy, sophomore, said. “The score was really close [to first], and I was really proud.”
Cindy Roth, English teacher, is the sponsor and coach of the team. The members are Breeauna Dowdy, Kali Ray, sophomores; Breanna Marie, Cooper Damrich, juniors; Logan Stelting, Andrea Salinas, and Marie Talbot, seniors.
Most of the students plan on writing new poems for the next round.
