Eleven journalism students qualified for state at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association’s regional contest at the University of Kansas on Feb. 24.

Students competed in several different categories in newspaper, photojournalism and yearbook; some of the contests were on site and some students completed their entries at school and submitted digitally.

In the on-site 5A/6A editorial cartoon competition, Megan Pham, sophomore, was awarded second place.

Receiving honorable mentions in other on-site contests were Sharidan Kraljic, senior, in copy editing; Jamie Pellikaan, junior, in feature writing and Anna Hurley, freshman, in yearbook sports writing.

In addition to the on-site competition, digital submissions were accepted in categories such as infographics, headline writing and various types of photography.

Kellianne Lopez, senior, and Brandon Keeling, junior, received first and second place respectively in the photo illustration contest.

Kayla Staley, senior, received an honorable mention for her infographic design as well as Ann Marie Hrdy for her academic photography submission. Max Stoneking, junior, and Rachel Pierson, senior, both earned honorable mentions for their headline writing, and Haley Peterson, junior, was awarded an honorable mention for her advertising submission.

Overall, the three groups were successful in a variety of categories, and all of the students who placed first, second and third or received an honorable mention qualify for the state competitions in late April and early May.
