The Comic Coffee House, located at 151st & Ridgeview, is a family-owned and operated business. The coffee house has a variety of drinks as well as some sweet treats. Like many places, the Comic Coffee House has a story of why it opened and its goals for the future to see the shop succeed.
As soon as you walk in, the coffeehouse feels very welcoming. You can also immediately tell that the theme is comics because a whole wall is lined with comics.
They have a wide variety of drinks such as coffee, smoothies, and fizzy’s, which are a blend of club soda with syrups that they have available. There is the option to get a fizzy drink on the menu, or you can build your very own.
Along with their drink, they have a selection of pastries that complement the coffee wonderfully.
The staff is very welcoming and are also the owners, so you get to have that interaction with someone who is truly passionate about what they do.
The coffeehouse also has an ongoing Dungeons and Dragons campaign every Wednesday at 5.30 pm. This is a really good opportunity to get to meet new people with the same interests and also contribute to helping bring the community together.
The overall experience of the Comic Coffeehouse is very enjoyable. It was very different from any other coffee shop in the sense that it felt more like home. It is a nice place to hang out and relax while enjoying the drinks and pastries that they have available. The peacefulness and colorful atmosphere ties it all together.
Comic Coffee House is owned and operated by Michael and Vania Gladney, the parents of sophomore Isabella Gladney. The coffee house had the inspiration behind opening a comic-themed coffee shop.
“So my parents made up the entire idea; the kids didn’t really have anything to do with it. My mom loves coffee, and my dad likes comics, so they decided to put their two interests together. It’s kind of romantic,” sophomore Isabella Gladney said.
As a family-owned business, opening the coffee shop had an impact on the family and their daily lives. However, it opened up opportunities for them as a business.
“I feel like we kinda got more recognition, you know, as a whole, and my dad has had a lot of opportunities to promote it,” Gladney said.
Opening the coffeehouse is a good place to get distracted from everyday things or simply to find something to fill the time.
“Something really exciting about opening the Comic Coffeehouse was that I had another place to go to if I didn’t really feel like being at home, cause I get bored at home,” Gladney said.
“And also there’s coffee and there’s smoothies and there’s pastries, and it’s just fun to just walk in.”
Out of the wide variety of drinks, Gladney has shared her favorite drink and also her favorite one to make.
“I help out at the coffee house on Saturdays and, I just sometimes when I’m just there, I also help, but I’m usually just behind the cash register, and sometimes, since the only things I can make are smoothies and fizzies, which are our sodas,” Gladney said. “So, whenever someone wants to have a fizzy or a smoothie, I can make it for them, but other than that, I’ll just do cashier stuff.”
The coffee shop has a unique atmosphere that comes from the creativity of the place as well as from the very kind and caring staff who enjoy interacting with the customers.
“It’s a very lively, very vibrant area, and if you’re really geeking and into comics and stuff like that, then I feel like it would be a place you would really enjoy,” Gladney said. “Especially if you just wanna hang out and talk to my dad, cause he likes to talk about the geeky stuff all the time with his customers.”
