Kristen White, debate coach, said, “Our goal for state this year is to win it all and get first place.”

Four-speaker state means that one team will be on affirmative side of the argument while the other team is negative on the subject.

At regionals, the two teams of Taylor Thompson, senior, and Tricia Bush, junior, and Cameron Clark, junior, and Alex Francis, senior, competed.

Upcoming competitions include the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) and Olathe Math Battle. According to John Hail, math team sponsor, AMC is a large international competition in which the best and brightest students compete.

Olathe Math Battle is a competition solely against the other three Olathe high schools, and the math team has previously won five out of the six years of the Olathe Math Battle.

CaSE competition

The Computer and Software Engineering (CaSE) CyberPatriot team completed the second preliminary round of the competition on Dec. 7 with a score of 300 out of 333 possible points.

Based on their score for this and the previous round, the team will move on to the silver, gold, or platinum tier for the state round on Jan. 30. With a combined score of 469, the team will move on to the platinum tier.

The tiers are determined by comparing the composite scores of all teams in each state, with the top 30 percent placed in platinum tier, the middle 40 percent in gold, and the bottom 30 percent in silver.

Based on the team’s performance in the state round, they will advance to the platinum tier of the regional round if they place in the top three teams in the state in their tier.
