Netflix and …..?

Students like streaming video sites to cable television over break

The on-demand Internet streaming website known as Netflix worked its way into the homes of many students this winter break.

According to a survey given previous to winter break, more than 140 students out of 180 planned to use Netflix during the break. This survey asked, which do students prefer: Netflix or cable television: nearly 87 percent preferred Netflix.

These results support the idea that Netflix might be affecting the use of cable. Since people can watch their favorite shows without commercials on almost any Internet device, students are watching less cable television.

“I watch less cable TV these days unless it’s not quite yet on Netflix,” Brett Blaize, sophomore, said.

Along with Blaize, Jordan Rangel, senior, agrees that Netflix is occasionally better than cable.

“I sometimes prefer Netflix over cable, but I don’t think it’s affecting cable,” Rangel said.

Some students enjoy Netflix so much that they would rather catch up on a nearly completed show than sleep.

Following the break, students, including Blaize and Rangel, admitted to staying up very late watching Netflix.

“I watched Netflix about every day. I would sometimes stay up until 3 a.m., watching ‘Parks and Recreation’ and ‘The Office,’” Alexis Blow, sophomore, said.

While hoping to catch up on a good show or two and refusing to sleep, students used various devices, such as Xbox, Play Station, tablet, etc., to watch Netflix.

“Over the break, I often used my phone to watch Netflix,” Blow said.

Blaize said he used his Play Station 4.

During the break, some students used Netflix to bond with their families by watching different television shows and movies together.

“Recently my family and I started watching ‘How to Make a Murderer’ on my Xbox,” Rangel said.

Much like Rangel and her family, not only did students “binge watch” television shows that were aired on cable, but they also watched shows specifically released on Netflix (the most popular are “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black”).

Although many students spent a portion (or the majority) of their break watching Netflix, not all of them spent their holidays in a similar fashion. Some students rarely use Netflix.

“I don’t really watch Netflix that much. The only thing I have actually watched was ‘One Tree Hill,’ but that was about it. I haven’t watched the show in a very long time,” Emily Clapp, senior, said.
