Trunk or Treat is a great chance to bring the community together during the spooky Halloween season. It brings different clubs and groups and allows them to bring the holiday spirit to children of all ages.

It also provides a safe place in the community for children to participate in the holiday. With Trunk or treat within a selected area parents are able to keep their children in eyesight but also still allow them to wander and feel safe to let them do so.

Victoria Gosselaar is the English II teacher here and the drill team Coach.

“It provides a space for people in our community to come and trick or treat safely and to meet all of our awesome kids.” Gosselaar said,

But it also takes some preparation from the different clubs and unions, in which they set up themes and costumes for themselves, all of which children would enjoy such as Superheroes and children’s TV shows or movies.

Trunk or Treat celebrated with stickers but some groups also participated with different types of candy. The school provided them with the DJ, candy, stickers, and toys. All together Trunk or Treat had over 30,000 items this year but they still managed to run out of materials.

This is not to mention the preparation each separate group puts in when decorating,

“We decided on a theme and then we bought all the items that were needed, “ Gosselaar said, “we had a slumber party theme with Cheer and then we just asked our girls if they wanted to volunteer their time.”

Scott Jesse is a junior and a member of the Orchestra.

“ASU [asian student union] had one of my favorite themes,” said Jesse, “they were all dressed up as pandas.”

Children from across the community come to trunk or treat, with different family members, friends, and hundreds of different costumes. It’s a celebration where children are allowed to have fun, dance, and eat candy while celebrating Halloween.

“Trunk or treat is a way to get people to come to the community and to just show off all the awesome things that we have at Olathe South.” said Gosselaar

Bringing the community together is one of the main goals of Trunk or Treat, with the different clubs all together to provide all sorts of fun and diversity. All the clubs and sports which participated have one thing in common, seeing the community come together.

“It’s nice to see all the kids together with their family,” said Jesse, “My favorite part was being able to see all the kids in their different costumes.”

Trunk or Treat brought the community in Olathe together and provided them with a safe place to celebrate the spooky season. With the different clubs and themes it allowed for a diverse celebration and with Trunk or Treat bringing Halloween to a wrap for the people in the community it gave a great start to continue on with the rest of the year with the other holiday celebrations.
