Early October of this year the third season of Heartstoppers came out. The previous two seasons of Heartstoppers have been very popular but this newest season has faced some backlash.
The past two seasons were directed by Euros Lyn, the newest season has brought in Andy Newberry to direct. Season three has lacked some things that the previous seasons had perfected.
The main problem of this current season is the storyline feels rushed, like they had a lot of plot and not enough time, but it wouldn’t feel rushed if they did not focus on the very small minuscule moments that are not essential to the plot or entertaining.
I found myself feeling bored at times because the scenes felt unnecessary. It sometimes felt like filler episodes which shouldn’t happen with a season that has only eight episodes.
Another issue is the amount of characters. While it’s nice to see Nick and Charlie’s friend group and their support systems, it takes away from Nick and Charlie’s love story and their very impactful storylines.
Right when you’re getting interested in what’s happening in the main characters’ storylines, it cuts to a completely unrelated story of their friends, it was hard to get invested in them and understand what was happening.
Despite these critiques, heartstoppers season three did a lot of things really well, one of my absolute favorites was the soundtrack. Music adds so much to a moment and a setting.
Music can make a scene ten times better, and that’s what it did in heartstoppers. Season three featured artists like beabadoobee, Ryan Beatty and Billie eilish.
Even when it’s a scene that’s so perfect you don’t think it could get any better, a song played that fit the scene perfectly and made it so much better.
The acting this season was phenomenal, Kit Connor who plays Nick Nelson portrayed sadness and devastation so well, I felt devastated watching. This season was very heavy and showed themes that are very emotional and the acting showed those emotional themes incredibly well.
Another notable actor was Jenny Walser who plays Tori Spring. We haven’t seen a lot of Tori in the past two seasons, but this season she was incredible. We got to see a completely new side of her character.
I would love to see more of her character maybe in a spin off specifically following her character. A spin off similar to To All The Boys and XO Kitty would be a great lead to follow for Hearstoppers if they ever considered it.
This season really did show the effects of an eating disorder very well, it showed not only the impact it has on the person but also the people who care about them.
The disorder was shown in a way you don’t often see, and it was shown very respectfully which also doesn’t happen often. I think they did a great job of diving into a serious topic that happens far too often.
The show also talked about Charlies OCD which was very impactful. I think Hearstoppers touches on mental health very frequently throughout the show which I really appreciate. I think it’s very important.
Though I think the best parts of Heartstopper are always the moments we get with Charlie and Nick. If you genuinely enjoy a romance, Heartstoppers is one of the best.
It’s so heart touching and sweet. Heartsoppers is puppy love in its best form. Nick and Charlie is what I think everyone dreams of in terms of their first love.
Netflix is yet to confirm if there will be another season, but hopefully we will get to see more. Heartstoppers is based on comics and there are more currently in the works so it’s probable we will get to see more of this show.
In all heartstoppers is a great watch whether you’re wanting to watch a romcom or something a little deeper. And if you’re struggling to find something to watch, Heartstoppers is a great option.
