Due to this year’s budget cuts, the fourth and fifth hour Student Volunteers class is needed more than ever.

The fourth hour students primarily pick up trash three days a week and empty recycling bins in classrooms. The fifth hour students are in charge of collecting the lunch trays for recycling. They work in 15-minute shifts, and when they are not collecting trays, they are helping out with other small projects throughout the building.

Having people to help out with the recycling is one of the most important jobs.

“It saves on trash production and helps support a green community. Taking care of the earth takes everyone,” Kaleb Stoppel, student volunteers teacher, said.

Because of budget cuts and reduced maintenance team, “the more students help, the more that frees up the custodial staff,” Stoppel, said.

The Student Volunteers class is an elective with no application, but there is a cap on how many students that are admitted.

“It’s a way for students to give back to their school,” Stoppel, said. As a result, “they have a clean school to be proud of.”
