What does Elia Hernandez enjoy about peer mentoring?
April 9, 2015
Elia Hernandez enjoys helping others, that’s why she is a peer mentor for the Interpersonal and Family Relationships class.
This is her first semester mentoring.
“I joined because I thought it would be a good opportunity to work with peers and make friends,” Hernandez said. “At first I was nervous because I did not know how to work with the kids; what they like, their personalities, etc.”
She enjoys peer mentoring because it has a positive effect on her.
“I like it because all the students are always happy and it is a very positive environment,” Hernandez said.
She, along other mentors, work together to help students with special needs acquire life skills.
“We do what we call Job Olympics where we work on things like sweeping, folding towels, etc., so when they graduate they can get a job,” Hernandez added.
She recently signed up to become a peer mentor in Inclusion Connections, where she will help the kids with disabilities to feel connected and part of the community.
She would like more people to join Peer Mentors.
“I think people should join because it is a fun experience; you learn a lot about yourself and become a better person”

IF you could know one fact about every person you meet, what would it be and why? If they like Starbucks, because I like it a lot.
